For as long as Batman fans could remember, they had all been clamoring for an adaptation of Alan Moore’s famed graphic novel The Killing Joke. With everyone from Tim Burton to Christopher Nolan citing it as inspiration for their motion pictures, it would only seem plausible for Warner Brothers to pounce and get the adaptation rolling. Even both Mark Hamill and Kevin Conroy said they would come out of their voice over retirements to do it. But over two decades following the release of Batman Mask of the Phantasm, the Moore adaptation seemed like it was a lost opportunity.
Enter Mask of the Phantasm director Bruce Timm, who came out and said The Killing Joke adaptation was underway. And by the end of July 2016 it was a reality, premiering at Comic Con. But with additions to the plot in order to pad the runtime, and more controversial decisions than you can shine a Bat signal on, it didn’t take long for Batman The Killing Joke to gain the wrong kind of notoriety.
Join Garrett, Adam, and Matt as they examine the controversy surrounding The Killing Joke, and determine whether it gets a bad rep, with Garrett watching it for the very first time.
