Since the “shared universe” conceit was working about as well as a band-aid over a severed arm, Warner Bros. knew that had to try something different. The powers that be decided to take a detour and focus on making a self-contained story set in the world of DC comics. How do you do that while still set yourself up for a potentially big box office haul? Well, you slap “Joker” on the title and you’re off to the proverbial money train.

There was cause for concern though and skepticism ran rampant, particularly with Todd Phillips behind the camera. Something funny (no pun intended) shortly afterwards. Joaquin Phoenix, notorious for his selective choices, agreed to star as the future Clown Prince of Crime. Set in a sleazy, 70’s New York, the production team began to work on telling a story set in Gotham but without being beholden to seeing The Caped Crusader.
