Joker (2019)

Since the “shared universe” conceit was working about as well as a band-aid over a severed arm, Warner Bros. knew that had to try something different. The powers that be decided to take a detour and focus on making a self-contained story set in the world of DC comics. How do you do that while still set yourself up for a potentially big box office haul? Well, you slap “Joker” on the title and you’re off to the proverbial money train.

There was cause for concern though and skepticism ran rampant, particularly with Todd Phillips behind the camera. Something funny (no pun intended) shortly afterwards. Joaquin Phoenix, notorious for his selective choices, agreed to star as the future Clown Prince of Crime. Set in a sleazy, 70’s New York, the production team began to work on telling a story set in Gotham but without being beholden to seeing The Caped Crusader.

As a box office smash and Academy Award winning feat, Joker is one of the most successful films ever released by Warner Bros. How do the boys feel about this “one-off” story? Be sure to tune in and find out the details in all their “spoilerific” ways.

Teen Titans Go! To The Movies (2018)

With one animated movie behind them (The Lego Batman Movie), Matt and Adam thought, ‘let’s torture Garrett some more with Teen Titans Go! To The Movies. Once again, Matt starts this podcast off doing a lot of explaining WHY he felt this needed to be included, as well as his own fandom associated with the Teen Titans property. Matt saw this in the movies with a friend of his, and Adam saw this in theaters with his kids. Not surprisingly, this was a first time watch for Garrett. Will it go as poorly as The Lego Batman Movie? The answer may surprise you.

Listen in as the boys dissects Teen Titans Go! To The Movies, and ponder whether there is an end to this retrospective in site.

Justice League (2017)

Can DC ever get it right? Needless to say The Three Men And A Retrospective Podcast have not been too impressed with what the Snyder Verse has brought us as far as this retrospective’s subject Batman goes. And now that Justice League, the Avengers of the DCEU and a sure fire hit given all the DC heroes are finally onscreen at the same time, is on the docket, things behind the scenes would HAVE to get better. Right??

Listen in as Garrett, Matt, and Adam continue their trek through the Caped Crusader’s big screen adventures. And boy does he have a an adventure going on here.

Was Zack Snyder kicked off the project BEFORE the terrible tragedy that befell his family officially did the job for him? Was Joss Whedon the right guy for the job? Is the movie’s bad reputation warranted? Listen to the boys answer all these questions on route to a review of this year’s The Batman.

The Lego Batman Movie (2017)

Deep in the heart of Percolated Media’s DC/Batman retrospective lies this look at The Lego Batman Movie, a movie that coming in Garrett was still at a loss as to why they were reviewing it. That answer and others are given in this dive into Lego’s attempt to kind of lighten things up, as the DARKNESS that came with Zack Snyder’s handling of the DCEU universe was still going full swing.

With The Lego Movie being a huge success in 2014, they set forth on their attempt to capitalize with a full movie about what was looked at as its main highlight – their portrayal of Batman. With Will Arnett back voicing the Caped Crusader and Zach Galifinakis here as his arch nemesis(or is he?) the Joker, they seemed to have the formula in place to make an entertaining night at the movies for Adam and his children. But was it?

Listen in as Garrett joins who he sometimes considers his greatest enemies Adam and Matt as they review The Lego Batman Movie, and try to figure out if it is a successful diversion or a further dive into a lot of the mediocrity they’ve been reviewing as of late.

Suicide Squad (2016)

It would seem to be a match made in heaven, wouldn’t it? A film about a team of no gooders united in gritty form, and the talent of David Ayer, the writer of the Oscar winning Training Day. Little did Ayer know, his film Suicide Squad would be used as a catalyst to try and pay off some Batman V Superman bills.

After Batman V Superman did not make what Warner Bros were expecting, they grasped onto what they deemed to be their last ditch effort to earn Marvel Films type respect. The trailer attached to that film which garnered a ton of positive buzz was that of Suicide Squad. So Warner Bros hired the editors of that trailer to recut what they saw was an unending feeling of dread that seemed to follow DC films ever since the success of Christopher Nolan’s Batman trilogy.

Listen in as Garrett, Matt, and Adam reveal what came of that edit, and if Suicide Squad, featuring the first theatrical appearance of popular DC Comics character Harley Quinn, is worth more than its reputation would seem to allow.

And don’t forget to keep checking in, as all of this leads up to a Three Men And A Retrospective Podcast review of Matt Reeves’s new film The Batman!

Batman The Killing Joke (2016)

For as long as Batman fans could remember, they had all been clamoring for an adaptation of Alan Moore’s famed graphic novel The Killing Joke. With everyone from Tim Burton to Christopher Nolan citing it as inspiration for their motion pictures, it would only seem plausible for Warner Brothers to pounce and get the adaptation rolling. Even both Mark Hamill and Kevin Conroy said they would come out of their voice over retirements to do it. But over two decades following the release of Batman Mask of the Phantasm, the Moore adaptation seemed like it was a lost opportunity…

Batman V Superman Dawn of Justice (Batman Edition) (2016)

After a much needed three week break into Predator territory, The Three Men And A Retrospective podcast is taking quite a jump this week. Batman V Superman Dawn of Justice was released a full twelve years and four in universe films after the film that was the basis of our previous DC review, Catwoman. Why did we take this approach?

That is one of the many questions they answer in this full in depth episode of the Three Men and a Retrospective Podcast. The other questions asked involve a lot of what went into this extremely polarizing Zach Snyder directed film. But if we were to answer everything that went into the making of the 2016 superhero film, it would take two podcasts. Which is why we are reviewing it AGAIN from Superman’s perspective next year.

But for now, listen in as the guys take a look at BvS from Batman’s point of view, and judge how each character we have followed in this seemingly non ending dive into the Batman Universe.

Prey (2022)

Despite having the proverbial architect Shane Black as director/writer, 2018’s The Predator was a disappointing effort in a long line of follow-ups to the 1987 original. Many thought the franchise would sit in the shelf for years as the studio figured out how to move forward. Little did we know that director Dan Trachtenberg would both pitch a new take and get the thumbs up to move forward. In his own words, he wanted to depict “the ingenuity of a human being who won’t give up, who’s able to observe and interpret, basically being able to beat a stronger, more powerful, well-armed force.” Sound too familiar to the Schwarzengger original? How about taking that concept and setting it over 300 years into the past?

With a studio buy out courtesy of “The Mouse House”, Prey would be set as a Hulu exclusive for Summer 2022. A lot has changed since this movie went into development. Was this new take able to bring some newfound rejuvenation to a franchise struggling to stay afloat? How does the minimalistic approach and condensed character roster effect the overall product? Join The Three Men and a Retrospective and listen to their spoiler filled discussion above. For the sake of Matt and Adam, they’re at least hoping it justified the need to review both Alien vs. Predator installments.

Speaking of returns, the boys are driving back to Gotham City next week but will include a pit stop into Metropolis. Their next entry in the Batman retrospective will be 2016’s Batman v. Superman: Dawn of Justice. Surely this won’t be a show that is in the least bit controversial? Be sure to come back next Friday and find out!
