Sometimes They Come Back For More (1998) (Stephen King Retrospective)

After having a surprising amount of fun last week, the boys were actually looking forward to watching this, third sequel to the original adaptation of a Stephen King short story. Taking place in the arctic and having major The Thing vibes, Sometimes They Came Back For More had all the potential of being the same type of direct to video trashy fun that Sometimes They Come Back Again was. Did the filmmakers succeed?

Join Garrett, Matt, and Adam as they conclude their look at the Sometimes They Come Back movies with this look at the third 1998 sequel. And be sure to stay until the end, as the boys reveal their next retrospective!

Sometimes They Come Back Again (1996) (Stephen King Retrospective)

When agreeing to do a Stephen King retrospective, the boys knew that there would be plenty of direct to video sequels and/or adaptations. The Night Shift Collection is notorious for a lot of them. But nothing previously started a future Oscar winner. Until now.

After the first Sometimes They Came Back was shown on TV, the rights were bought and a whole new company was in charge. But now, they were going straight to the video store shelves. With Family Ties’s Michael Gross, Pulp Fiction’s Alexis Arquette, and the aforementioned Hilary Swank, could this be the type of hidden gem Garrett was craving for?

Listen in as the boys review the 1996 follow up to the surprisingly decently reviewed Sometimes They Come Back, the very creatively titled Sometimes They Come Back…Again.

Sometimes They Come Back (1991) (Stephen King Retrospective)

While looking at the literary resume of Stephen King, one might find some similarities. Reason being King would seem to be honing skills in short story form before embarking on bigger books later on in his career. This all pertains to Sometimes They Come Back, a story originally published in Cavalier Magazine right before Carrie was released, and then re-released in the Night Shift, the book whose film adaptations we are reviewing now.

In 1985, our good buddy Dino DeLaurentiis decided that Sometimes They Come Back would work better in a full feature film as opposed to the anthology format his then in production Cat’s Eye was being made. But in the time between 1986 and 1991, Dino’s production company had gone into bankruptcy. However, King’s name was still bankable as the films Pet Semetary and the Oscar winning Misery, as well as the 1990 tv movie adaptation It were certified successes. So why not add Tim Matheson and King veteran Brooke Adams to the Sometimes They Come Back adaptation, and bring in Friday The 13th Part VI Jason Lives director Tom McLaughlin to helm it, and then bring it to CBS tv. How did it turn out?

Join Garrett, Matt, and Adam to have that question answered, and be sure to come back (see what we did there?) the next couple weeks as we will review all three (yes, three) entries in the Sometimes They Come Back series.

Trucks (1997) (Stephen King Retrospective)

With the exception of sadists like Garrett and Matt, no one -especially Adam- was clamoring for a remake of Maximum Overdrive. But in 1997, armed with a script from Poltergeist 3 scribe Brian Taggert, a Canadian production company took it upon themselves to do just that. But with a more serious approach to Stephen King’s 16 page story, could 1997’s Trucks possibly be better?

Join Garrett, Matt, and Adam as they continue their trek through the King Night Shift stories, and close the book (for now?) on another story out of that short story collection.

Next week? Sometimes They Come Back.

Week 18: Jets at Dolphins

The season ended as it began for the Jets. With an L and Joe Flacco under center. What a strange, tumultuous and disappointing way to end what’s been a season of ups and downs. Goudreau managed to survive the roller coaster that was 17 games only having cases of motion sickness. With a season’s worth of film, Goudreau is here ready to perform an autopsy on Gang Green.

How did he feel about watching the football equivalent of bumper-to-bumper traffic? Is there anything to take away from six straight losses to end the year? How did he respond to Saleh and GM Joe Douglas’s comments during their exit interviews? This week’s show will give you all those answers.

To all the listeners, thanks for taking the time to do so. Be sure to keep up to date on this site. Matt won’t be posting during the playoffs but he’ll have some offseason shows to keep the content flowing.

Maximum Overdrive (1986)

“I’m going to scare the hell out of you! And that’s a promise.”

With these two sentences, author Stephen King launched a campaign to top those who directed films before him (unknown directors like Brian DePalma, Stanley Kubrick, David Cronenberg, amongst others) in a trailer that Garrett and Matt have derided since they started working together. But unbelievably, they have not reviewed the movie it’s attached to, 1986’s Maximum Overdrive. Until now.

Even though this review is relatively soon into the Three Men and a Retrospective Podcast’s look at King’s work, Maximum Overdrive was made a decade into his onscreen cinematic presence. So when producer Dino DeLaurentiis told King that he is the real star of his book adaptations and he should direct the next one, the superstar author took the bait. The result is one of the most chaotic -both onscreen and off- productions of all time.

True to his role on this retrospective, Adam had never seen Maximum Overdrive until this review. How would he take the campy approach King’s onscreen product took? And how would Garrett and Matt feel about revisiting a movie they’ve wanted to review together for so long?

Listen below to find out!!

Week 17: Jets at Seahawks

New year, same old Jets. That’s all Goudreau could speak to himself after watching his team lay an egg in the Hawk’s Nest.

Matt had plenty to say amidst a myriad of negatives. Was the season a failure? Where did it all go wrong? What changes will be coming for the team after losing 5 straight with a possible 6 on the horizon?

Listen in to a very somber/downtrodden episode as Matt divulges everything on his mind.

Best of 2022/Q&A and End-of-Year Celebration

It’s hard to believe that’s been almost a year since we launched here at Percolated Media. There’s a lot of people to thank for helping us make the transition to a new platform. To celebrate a successful first go-around, the boys got together for a special show. Garrett and Matt continue their tradition of revealing their favorite movies of 2022 but now with the new addition of Adam joining the fray. They also discuss how they feel the year has gone, both artistically and personally, before unveiling their choices.

In addition, we answer questions live on-air from our beloved listeners. We couldn’t be more impressed with the amount of great material we were supplied. We also talk about our 2023 slate and all the high-profile retrospectives we will be covering this year. It’s going to be our biggest year yet and we are ecstatic for what’s to come.

For now, we spent three plus hours talking about what we’ve done before closing the book on 2022. Thank you all for listening and enjoy!

Week 16: Jets vs. Jaguars

Thursday Night Football was about as unwatchable as watching your siblings get the gift of their dreams on Christmas and you open up socks. Goudreau is here to unravel the debacle at Metlife Stadium. Who bares the weight of the responsibility in this loss? Is the defense “overrated?” Were Jets fans right to boo Zach Wilson into the proverbial abyss?

Matt also divulges further on the QB situation, why Zach Wilson is done as the franchise starter and where the Jets go from here. That also includes hypotheticals about the last two games and even the potential for next season.

Thank you everyone for listening all year! 2022 was a blast and hopefully we can ring in the New Year with bigger and better.

Avatar The Way of Water (2022)

Thirteen years is a very long time to wait for a sequel. But those who spent most of the end of 2009 through 2010 repeatedly going back Pandora (as reported way back when) would have to wait just that long before director James Cameron would finally be able to give people at least part of what he promises, which is the first of seven(!) sequels that are in his head. So was it worth the wait?

Join Matt, Garrett, and Nav’i fan Adam as they tread the waters of Avatar The Way of Water, and decide if the film feels like that of a well thought out piece, and then say if there is any possible way the movie lives up to the 2009 film’s financial expectations.

And be sure to stay until the end, as the boys talk a little about what’s in store for their planned year end show!

Percolated Media Holiday Interview Special

Hello Percolated Media listeners!

To help bring in the new year very soon, Garrett flies solo on a podcast and interviews author, podcaster, and (newly anointed) friend Lani Diane Rich. Listen in as Lani talks about everything from what got her into writing, how she was able to write a set of novels as a single mother, and the sacrifices needed to be made in order to finish what you start. She also talks about her new writing workshop and how it can help you achieve your writing goals.

We then divulge into some points about one of Garrett’s favorite shows Buffy The Vampire Slayer, which are points Rich made on her Still Pretty Podcast over at Chipperish Media. Things like how Buffy does (or doesn’t) deal with trauma in her life and how we should look at the alleged antics of one-time nerd icon now shamed cancelled Buffy creator Joss Whedon. If you’re into the retrospective format we do here at Percolated Media then I definitely recommend you check out Lani’s podcasts over at her site Chipperish Media, as she covers everything from Buffy to Angel to Matt’s favorite show The West Wing, amongst many others. And if you’re interested in her writing workshop, check out www.writingmagically.com. And who knows? She may show up on a future retrospective or two.

Be sure to come back this week as not only will we have our review of Avatar: The Way of Water, but also our year end special where we not only give our favorite films of the year, but also answer your questions and talk about future retrospectives, and more!
