Percolated Media Holiday Interview Special

Hello Percolated Media listeners!

To help bring in the new year very soon, Garrett flies solo on a podcast and interviews author, podcaster, and (newly anointed) friend Lani Diane Rich. Listen in as Lani talks about everything from what got her into writing, how she was able to write a set of novels as a single mother, and the sacrifices needed to be made in order to finish what you start. She also talks about her new writing workshop and how it can help you achieve your writing goals.

We then divulge into some points about one of Garrett’s favorite shows Buffy The Vampire Slayer, which are points Rich made on her Still Pretty Podcast over at Chipperish Media. Things like how Buffy does (or doesn’t) deal with trauma in her life and how we should look at the alleged antics of one-time nerd icon now shamed cancelled Buffy creator Joss Whedon. If you’re into the retrospective format we do here at Percolated Media then I definitely recommend you check out Lani’s podcasts over at her site Chipperish Media, as she covers everything from Buffy to Angel to Matt’s favorite show The West Wing, amongst many others. And if you’re interested in her writing workshop, check out www.writingmagically.com. And who knows? She may show up on a future retrospective or two.

Be sure to come back this week as not only will we have our review of Avatar: The Way of Water, but also our year end special where we not only give our favorite films of the year, but also answer your questions and talk about future retrospectives, and more!

Avatar (2009)

One of the first things Adam asked when Matt and Garrett asked him to come along on their journey of building a new site was, ‘are we doing Avatar?’ Well Adam, here’s your answer, and we hope you’re happy.

No one knew what to expect when King of the World director James Cameron decided to take on a whole new world of science fiction that could only come from his head. The only things we knew were that it was the most expensive film ever made and it was full of tall blue smurfs. And once again, twelve years after Titanic managed to become the biggest movie of all time, Avatar comes out at the end of 2009 to do it again. But how does it hold up?

Join Garrett, Matt, and Adam as they plug into the world of Pandora and decide if it deserves the mantle of biggest money maker of all time. And don’t forget to come back next week as the boys will then review its sequel, Avatar The Way of Water!

Week 15: Lions at Jets

Sunday’s game against Detroit gave the Jets multiple chances to win, but it was a collective team disappointment. Every facet of the team contributed in some way to the final defeat by the score of 20-17. Goudreau did indeed watch the game in full and decided to tape his show a day earlier than you are accustomed to.

Rest assured; this show is not going to be a meltdown of December proportions. Instead, consider this a therapeutic expulsion of frustration on the part of your host. It wasn’t Christmas cheer by any means but you taking the time to listen is a great Holiday gift.

Hope you enjoy the show and have a great Holiday season!

Cat’s Eye (1985) (Stephen King Retrospective)

It may seem weird to be in the middle of December and talk about Stephen King. But the truth is the coldness that comes from being frightened by King…is nowhere to be found in Stephen King’s Cat’s Eye unless you’re a smoker, afraid of heights, or a six year old child. But even given the lack of King tropes, and the advent of dark comedy in the Lewis Teague directed film, does it make for a bad viewing experience?

Join Garrett, Matt, and Adam as they dive into King’s 1985 Dino Delaurentis production Cat’s Eye. And to add even more intrigue to the podcast, two of the boys have not seen the film and it is indeed something they have been wanting to talk about for years: An anthology film.

Also be sure to stay tuned until the end of the show as the three hosts also reveal what their year end retrospective will be. And as a hint, let’s just say this will be a great franchise for people who are feeling ‘blue’ should listen to!

Night Shift Collection (1984): Stephen King Retrospective

After lingering in Scorsese/DiCaprio land for five weeks, Matt and Garrett welcome Adam back to the third seat. But ‘welcome’ might not be as fitting a word as ‘force’. To celebrate the occasion, the boys return to Stephen King land. But what they’re reviewing is still in question, even after the recording has commenced.

After Carrie, Salem’s Lot (which we’re getting to), and The Shining, King needed a little more time to finish his magnum opus, The Stand. But his contract had him needing to put out one book a year. To satisfy his publisher, King put together his very first book of short stories, Night Shift.

Listen in as the boys explain the King created concept of the ‘dollar baby’, review future successful director Frank Darabont’s debut King adaptation The Woman in the Room, and Matt and Adam yell at Garrett for having them watch these three film shorts.

The Wolf Of Wall Street (2013)

As the years went on, it was becoming a big not so inside Hollywood joke that Leonardo DiCaprio would not join his big name director and win that Academy Award which had eluded him in the nearly two decades since his first Oscar notices came with What’s Eating Gilbert Grape. Their last collaboration, the psychological thriller Shutter Island, was a big financial success, but did little in bringing more Oscar buzz to the Leo camp.

So of course, they turn to a frat comedy in the guise of a Wall Street biopic in the form of 2013’s The Wolf Of Wall Street. Once again guided by an at this point over 70 year old Martin Scorsese, DiCaprio stepped into the film’s center piece, as renowned as he is hated real life figure Jordan Balfort. But at three hours, can the boys hang in, while also finally doing a podcast without fighting? Of course not. But where does Garrett, Matt, and Mike stand when it comes to Leo acting like he’s on quaaludes? One of their answers will downright shock you.

Thanks to Mike, and everyone who listens for once again helping us get through another full (for now) retrospective. Be sure to stay until the end, as the boys outline what they’re bringing Mike back for next year, as well as go over the slate that is going to close out the year!

Shutter Island (2010)

After finally winning the elusive Oscar that had been teasing him most of his career, Martin Scorsese had the cinematic world at his disposal. But in his mind, there was no easier decision to be made than reunite with his current version of DeNiro in Leonardo DiCaprio and take on the project of adapting Mystic River’s author Dennis Lehane’s novel Shutter Island. The book is about a US Marshall going to solve the murder of his wife and children. But with psychological horror elements sprinkled throughout, this is far from the gangster type storytelling that has garnered him his Oscars. So how does the project come off?

Join Garrett, Matt, and Mike as they reunite to discuss the 2010 movie that proved February is not the kiss of death month that movie studios were afraid of. And be sure to come back next week as they conclude this series (for now) with 2013’s Wolf Of Wall Street.

The Departed (2006)

With The Aviator, Martin Scorsese proved that he was in on Leonardo DiCaprio for the long haul. And for DiCaprio, the film -much to Garrett’s chagrin- gave him the credibility he had been looking for since being the apple of every teenage girl’s eye in Titanic. So what would they do for a follow up?

How about going back to Scorsese’s gangster roots? With a William Monihan script that generated a fair amount of buzz, and source material in Hong Kong’s Infernal Affairs that was near the top of many critic’s top of the year list, it would seem Scorsese had a lot to work with.

You enter a cast that included Jack Nicholson, Matt Damon, Vera Fermiga, and Alec Baldwin among others, and you have all the makings of another notch on the belt of the two focuses of this series. But even with The Departed finally getting Scorsese what some say is a long deserved Best Picture win, does it live up to what the boys were expecting? And will Matt be allowed to speak about a movie he’s been looking forward to talking about since this retrospective started, instead of sitting back and letting Mike and Garrett argue? Listen below to find out!
